Utrillo, Le Lapin Agile
Maurice Utrillo, French 1883- 1955 Le Lapin Agile, 1914 Oil on cardboard 20 ¾ x 28 in. (52.7 x 71.7 cm) Museum purchase through the Flint Board of Education with funds given by Mrs. James Parkhill 2005.86

Located in Montmartre, a colorful section of Paris, the cabaret known as La Lapin Agile was a favorite meeting place for artists. Instead of a brightly colored, vibrant scene, Utrillo has chosen muted colors to reveal some of his own melancholic nature. With a somber sky and bare trees the artist shows another side of this popular nighttime destination. The nightclub got its name—the Agile Rabbit—from a large painting of a rabbit jumping out of a saucepan. Known as Gill’s Rabbit, for the artist who created it, over time the name evolved into the Agile Rabbit.
